The eyes are the windows of the soul, so the saying goes. If so then the picture above sums up Nick Clegg rather well. The debacle over Europe has, if nothing else, raised one burning question in terms of British politics - what exactly are the LibDems and what are they for? According the William Hague Nick Clegg was in perfect accord with David Cameron's refusal to engage with his European counterparts. The one party in Britain that has always pledged its full support for the European Union has now suddenly and inexplicably changed course. We asked Nick Clegg why; "Politics is about change and nothing makes for faster change in terms of principles than being in power. While the Tories would like to be compassionate but find they can't because Labour has spent all the money, the LibDems would like to be more pro-Europe but can't because we'd all lose our nice, cushy, well-paid jobs. I'm very worried about unemployment - especially mine." Meanwhile David Cameron is still celebrating his triumph in failing to get what he wants and leaving Britain almost completely isolated in Europe. "Nick and I are clear as to what is in Britain's interest, protecting our greedy and selfish bankers from the consequencies of their own actions and making the working people of Britain pay for mistakes they didn't make. We will not allow some filthy foreigner to protect our citizens against us without at least sulking about it."
